When I first got into design, I was fascinated by how something as simple as a button or layout could completely shift how we interact with technology. Over time, that fascination evolved into something deeper—an obsession with creating experiences that don’t just look good, but actually work.
I’m Hopemidah Kendi—a UI/UX designer and developer based in Nairobi, Kenya. I build digital products that put users first, blending intuitive design with technical precision. But more importantly, I design with purpose: to make complex systems usable, accessible, and even enjoyable.
From Aesthetics to Usability
In the early days of my design career, I fell into the same trap many new designers do—spending hours perfecting the "look" of an interface. But it didn’t take long before I realized: great design isn’t just about what users see, it’s about how they feel when using your product.
That’s what drew me deeper into UX—understanding behavior, simplifying flows, and solving real user problems.
Whether it’s building internal tools for conservancies in Nanyuki, revamping government websites in Meru, or leading mobile app design at Inked Studios, my focus has always been on functionality and impact.
What I Believe As a Designer
Design should be inclusive. I create with users of all backgrounds and devices in mind—especially in Africa, where connectivity, literacy, and tech familiarity vary widely.
Design systems matter. I believe in consistency, scalability, and thoughtful reusability. I’ve seen firsthand how systems empower teams and elevate product quality.
Good UX is invisible. If someone completes a task smoothly and without confusion, I’ve done my job—even if they never “notice” the design.
Collaboration is key. I’ve worked side by side with analysts, developers, and stakeholders to ensure that what we’re building isn’t just pretty—but purposeful.
What I’ve Built
Some highlights from my journey so far:
Increased bookings by 30%Â for hospitality clients through streamlined, mobile-first interfaces.
Led UI/UX efforts on a time management app for working students—focused on making planning less overwhelming and more rewarding.
Designed dashboards and tools for guards and community workers in remote regions—proving that useful design doesn’t have to be flashy.
What’s Next
Right now, I’m focused on designing smarter systems, growing my leadership in UX strategy, and contributing to digital tools that actually improve lives. I want my work to inspire better, more accessible design in Africa’s fast-evolving tech scene.
This blog and this portfolio is a window into how I think, what I value, and where I’m going next. If you’re building something meaningful and need a designer who cares about both form and function—I’d love to chat.
Thanks for reading.
