Project type
Mobile Application
Date
2024
Location
Nairobi
Role: UI/UX Designer
Platform: Mobile-first (Android & iOS)
Tools: Figma, Maze, Adobe Illustrator, Google Form
Overview:
KE Events is a mobile-first platform designed to help users discover, share, and attend events happening across Kenya—from music festivals and art exhibitions to business conferences and workshops. The app was built with a focus on local culture and user behavior, offering a curated, vibrant experience for Kenya’s growing digital-first audience.
Challenge:
-Fragmented event discovery experience in Kenya, often spread across multiple platforms (WhatsApp, Instagram, posters, etc.)
-Lack of centralized, trustworthy, mobile-optimized platforms for event browsing and ticketing.
-Users needed an easy way to filter events by interest, location, and date—without being overwhelmed.
My Role & Process:
1.User Research:
Conducted user interviews and surveys (20+ participants aged 18–35) to understand current behaviors and pain points
Key insights: users want fast access to relevant events, visual previews, and seamless ticketing
2. Information Architecture:
Created user flows for event discovery, RSVP/ticketing, and event sharing.
Mapped out core user journeys including "Find an event this weekend" and "Buy a ticket for a friend".
3.Wireframing & Prototyping:
Low-fidelity wireframes to test navigation and card layout styles
Interactive Figma prototypes used in usability testing to refine the onboarding, search filters, and event detail screens
4. Visual Design & Branding:
Developed a vibrant, energetic UI to match the diversity of Kenyan events
Created a clean interface with bold typography, color-coded categories, and swipe-based navigation for ease on mobile
Designed a consistent icon set and a lightweight design system for future scalability.
Key Features Designed:
-Personalized event feed (based on user interests and location)
-Category and location filters
-Event detail pages with images, maps, and ticketing options
-One-tap share functionality via WhatsApp and social media
-Lightweight onboarding for first-time users
Impact & Results:
-Positive feedback during prototype testing:
“This is so much faster than searching on Instagram or Google.”
-Reduced time-to-discovery by 40% (based on usability test metrics)
-Clearer path to event RSVP/purchase via streamlined flows
-Design handed off to developers with complete UI kit and documentation.
What I Learned:
-Local context is crucial—design must reflect not just visual style but also habits (e.g., social sharing via WhatsApp)
-Mobile-first design requires clarity, speed, and familiarity
-Small UX improvements (like smart filtering and map previews) make a huge difference in decision-making
